Stick Selection Guide
There are a few important things to consider when choosing a floorball stick.
1. The most important thing: Stick Length
If you choose a stick that is too long, it will be harder for you to control the ball, as you are too far away from the ball. If you on the other hand choose a stick that is too short, you will get problems with your back, as you will play with the back unnaturally bent.
Recommended way of measuring the length:
- Using a Floorball stick; place the stick in front of the body in a straight line to the floor. The stick should reach from the navel up to one fist height above the navel.
- Using a tape measurer; measure (in cm) from the floor to somewhere between "your navel" and "one fist hight above your navel". Then subtract 15 cm of the value you got. This is because the length referred to in the web hop is the shaft only and doesn't include the blade.
A 96 cm stick is rather normal for adult players. General advice for choosing length of stick is as follows
| Height | Height (cm) | Shaft Length (cm) |
| 4'3 (up to) | 130 cm (up to) | 60,70,75 |
| 4'3" - 5'1" | 130 - 155 | 80,85,87 |
| 5'1" - 5'5" | 155 - 165 | 87,92 |
| 5'5" - 6'3" | 165 - 190 | 92,96,100 |
| 6'3"+ | 190+ | 100+ |
2) Also very very important: Keeping the stick Right or Left of the body?
As a first time buyer it is important to be aware of which side you play. Normally right handed players use sticks where the blade is open to the left side (left side of the body), and lefthanded players play with stick where the blade is open to the right side (right side of the body).
In the UK players have usually been trained in keeping the stick on the Right side of the body (due to Hockey). However, a Right handed person should if they want to maximize their Floorball potential, train and play with the stick Left side of the body.
3) Stick Flex
Stick shafts have a different flex which will normally range 23 to 35. A high flex will give a soft shaft which provides improved ball control and harder wrist shots. Low flex will provide a stiff shaft and extra hard slap shot. A majority of players choose a flex between 26 and 29. A flex greater then 29 is usually for hobby players and schools. A flex lower than 26 will suit a big, strong and experienced player.
SOFTFLEX = 35mm (junior - beginner)
FIRMFLEX = 31mm (junior - beginner)
MIDFLEX = 29mm (intermediate)
STRONGFLEX = 27mm (intermediate)
STEELFLEX = 25mm (experienced)
DIAMONDFLEX = 23mm (expert)
4) Blade
Blade hardness is usually defined Hard-Medium-Soft. Some manufacturers have more options. A hard blade is good for shooting and is predominatly used by defenders or very experienced players. A soft blade is good for dribbling and ball control and is often used by forwards and players new to the sport. Medium is the most common choice.
